Diorama Film Festival winner makes it to Oscars



'Ward Masmoum' (Poisonous Roses) an Egyptian Feature Film that won the Viewers' Choice Award' at the First Diorama International Film Festival in New Delhi is Egypt's Official Entry to the prestigious Oscars 2020. Our hearty congratulations to the Programming Team of Diorama International Film Festival.  


Based on Ahmed Zaghloul Al-sheety's 1990 novel Poisonous Roses for Saqr, the film is centered on two siblings, Tahya and Sakr, who live with their mother in Cairo's environmentally unsafe and impoverished tannery district.


In a strange relationship between sister and brother, overprotective Taheya makes Sacr stay at home while she earns a living by cleaning public toilets. "Poisonous Roses" stars Mahmoud Hemeida and Merihan Magdi; it is written and directed by Ahmed Fawzi Saleh.


Director Ahmed Fawzi Saleh

Saleh is an Egyptian screenwriter who was born in 1981. In addition to being a talented filmmaker, he is a human rights activist and a graduate from the Cairo Film Institute's screenwriting department.

His experience in film making includes co-writing several documentary films and directing the short film "Mocha" (2006). In 2008, he was an assistant director to Palestinian filmmaker Rashid Masharawi. "Poisonous Roses" is Saleh's first feature film.
